Vacation really started wednesday afternoon when the PTA hosted an amazing Thanksgiving dinner for all students, teachers and family. We had all the typical turkey, potatoes, stuffing and pie, it was great. The Middle School Student Council also sold 60 kites, a great fundraiser. Because I am in charge of MS Student Council, I stayed plenty busy. Tony helped many elementary kids try to get thier kites in the air. It was a beautiful and fun afternoon.
We left Xela at about 3:00 wednesday afternoon on a bus that arrived in Guatemala City at about 8:00. A friend picked us up, brought us to McDonalds and then to our next bus stop. We then had a 8 hour over night bus ride to Tikal. I slept almost the whole time, so it was not a bad ride. We arrived in Flores at about 7:30 am and then took an hour micro bus ride to tikal national park. We spent most of the day exploring the park. We hired a English speaking tour guide which was a great choice, he was full of all kinds of information and was able to lead us to all the important parts of the park. We walked for over three hours and still did not see it all. Tikal was a massive Mayan civilization which is now in ruins but with only 20% excavated, it was fascinating. Besides all the ruins we were able to see two kinds of monkeys and many other kinds other wild life including taranchulas. (see below) We spent the night in the park at a hotel and left at 6:00 the Friday morning for another bus ride.
(watch the bottom left and you will see a baby monkey jumping trees to get to his family)
After a five hour bus ride (only because it broke down for a good 30 minutes) we arrived at Rio Dulce to meet 4 of our other friends. We found the nearest dock and called the hotel to come and pick us up. We spent the next day and a half in the sun, swimming, kayaking, playing cards, doing puzzles and just relaxing, it was amazing. Saturday night we took a little boat ride to a swiss restaurant a little down the river for thier BBQ buffet. It was some of the best meat I have had in Guatemala! We left at about 6:30 Sunday morning and after many hours on two different buses (one of which broke down again) we were back home in Xela by 7:30 last night!
It was a great vacation and we used our last oppurtunity to travel in Guatemala to see many of the sites we really wanted to and to relax at the same time! Thank God for good travel, safety and health! I have made three new album on shutterfly so check those out!
Today we had our second Ultrasound. We were really excited to find out the sex of the baby, but becuase he/she is such an active little thing the doc could not get a good view and we still do not know what it is. But that is ok, because everything else looked great and the doctor even moved my due date up a week, so it is now at April 1!
Only 16 more days and we will be in the states!!! We are so excited!
