Election Weekend

Tomorrow, (Sunday) is election day in Guatemala. This may not like it would effect us, but because of the social and political traditions in Guatemala, we were told to stay home all weekend. Last night we went to a friends house and when walking home, town was dead, and eerily quiet. This afternoon we met a friend for lunch and then when to the grocery store. We are now home at about 3:00 and plan on staying here until Monday morning. It is a "dry" weekend in Guatemala as no alcohol is suppose to be sold, this is done to try to keep people calm and in control, we will see how that plays out. 24 people have already been killed in Guatemala because of the elections, none in Xela, but this is still scary. It's very interesting to see politics played out here. There are massive parades and lots of fire crackers and bands around town supporting different candidates. Guatemalans are very passionate about their country, and it is interesting to see this first hand. Campaigning here is very different than in the US for many reasons, one is because so many people are illiterate, so there are lots of symbols and songs - and everybody knows them. OK enough about Guatemalan politics. It just gives us an opportunity to get lots of school work done at home!
We had a good week at school. We are really getting to know the students and their personalities, it is fun. I gave three detentions this week, so the was exciting. The students responded well and they now know for sure to not mess around in Mrs. Schnyders class!! I also started a bible study with three other ladies from school this week. We are going to meet once and week and we are going through the book of Daniel. The other women are great and I am really excited about our time together!
That's all for now, keep the emails coming, we loving hearing from everyone back home!
